Advice available for people caring for children of relatives or family friends

What is Kinship Care?

All across Scotland, thousands of people care for children because their natural parents are unable to do so. These are often grandparents, aunts and uncles but can also be family friends. People who look after children in these kinds of circumstances are often known as "kinship carers".

The Scottish Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) Service is working with the Scottish Government to provide an advice and information service for kinship carers - people like you.

Whoever you are, whatever the problem, the Scottish CAB Service can help. We have an extensive electronic information system, AdviserNet, which now includes information specifically relating to kinship care issues.

    • Benefits and other financial entitlement
    • Entitlement to the Kinship Care Allowance
    • Entitlement to benefits
    • Money Advice
    • Establishing the legal status of the kinship care arrangement arrangement
    • Housing
    • Health
    • Education

Advice delivered by bureaux is quality assured and underpinned by extensive training.  For more information please contact your local Citizens Advice Bureau or call the National Helpline on

We can also provide tailor made presentations about Kinship Care, the Kinship Care Allowance and its effect on benefits to groups, organisations and services.
